Snorkeling with The Whale Shark Isla Mujeres

Mexico Living – An Ancient Creature Returns to Isla Mujeres & Holbox Island

One of the beauties of Mexico living is awaiting the annual return of the monstrous whale shark  to Isla Mujeres and Holbox Island in the Yucatan peninsula.

Tourist snorkelers travel in droves to the Yucatan during late Spring to witness the filter-feeding species of shark and take advantage of photographing themselves next to this ancient specimen of the largest of fish species in the world.

Isla Mujeres & Holbox Island – A Mexico Living Adventure

Isla Mujeres is listed as one of the best places to retire in Mexico and Holbox Island (pronounced HOLBOSH) is a major tourist destination.

The whale shark is known to migrate every Spring to various parts of the world where the seas are tropical and warm-temperate.  Isla Mujeres and Hobox Island, in the Yucatan, are two places to which the 60 million year old whale shark species returns annually.

The whale shark have been reported to measure up to 46 feet long and weigh as much as 66 tons.  Although this sounds like a beast, it is the ancient, most revered beauty of the sea.  The closest location in Mexico living to witness this beast is in the beauty of the two wonderful islands on the Yucatan peninsula;  Isla Mujeres and Holbox Island.

Tour companies can feast on the many tours they sell during this season for snorkelers to swim with the whale sharks, because whale sharks feast on plankton and other sources of nutrients that float through the water, leaving humans off their menu!  This species of fish is called  a filter-feeding shark.  Simply, that means that they feed by straining suspended matter and food particles from water.

In 2011, it was a true Mexico living adventure when the largest number of whale shark ever recorded feeding was reported off the shores of the Yucatan in Mexico.

Enjoy a Mexico Living Adventure Now

Now is one of the most fabulous times to experience Mexico living by taking an adventurous Mexican tour to the Caribbean side of the Yucatan to witness this annual phenomena of the seasonal feeding aggregation of the whale shark.

The whale shark does not pose any imminent danger to humans, although it is of massive proportions to humans. Despite its size, the whale shark is docile and will sometimes allow a diver to hitch a ride.  Regardless of the docile nature of this magnificent sea creature, caution is always advised.  The power of their feeding can seem like a huge vacuum to a diver who gets in the way of their mouth.
